As NLTG takes strides in delivering new short courses and services for business, we decided to sit down with our very own industry expert, Marc Murphy, course deliverer of NLTG’s First Aid and Fire Safety courses, and delve into what makes him the man for the job.
We asked…
What is your area of expertise?
With over three decades of experience in the fire service, my area of expertise spans both operational firefighting and fire safety. Starting as an operational firefighter at the age of 20, I dedicated myself to learning the craft and responsibilities of firefighting, working my way through the ranks. After 31 years of frontline service, I progressed to the role of Watch Commander, where I gained significant leadership experience in managing emergency responses and guiding teams through high-pressure situations.
During my time as an Operational Firefighter/Officer, trauma care was an integral part of daily duties to provide readiness for operational incidents, such as, road traffic collisions, casualty management in fire scenarios, as well as being trained for major incidents.
Later, I transitioned into the role of Fire Safety Inspector, where I could apply my operational knowledge to prevention. This position gave me the opportunity to assess buildings, conduct risk assessments, and develop fire safety plans aimed at ensuring compliance with fire safety legislation. Understanding both the technical and human factors that contribute to fire safety has been key in this role, allowing me to make tangible improvements in community safety.
Key Achievements: Career Milestones and Personal Triumphs
Throughout my career in the fire service, I’ve been fortunate to experience some truly rewarding milestones and moments that I’m proud to reflect on. One of my earliest and most significant achievements was successfully entering the fire service at the age of 20.
Over the years, I worked my way through various roles. A career highlight was reaching the level of Watch Commander, where I had the privilege of leading my own team. Being in charge of a watch came with its own set of challenges, but it was also an opportunity to guide, support, and mentor fellow firefighters.
In recognition of my service and leadership, I was fortunate to receive commendations for performance at incidents attended. These awards were a testament to the dedication, commitment and ability of myself the team.
How can people connect with you?
Connecting with others has always been something I value, whether it’s for professional collaboration or simply exchanging ideas and experiences. If you’d like to get in touch, there are a few ways you can connect with me.
