The world of skills came together on the 5th June to honour the outstanding achievements of individuals and organisations at the highly acclaimed City & Guilds Lion Awards. North Lancs Training Group, along with staff and students, took home the most awards of the night. Overall, the Group won the Centre of Excellence award, whilst a tutor won the People’s Choice Award and a student was named ‘Apprentice of the Year’.

The judges selected North Lancs Training Group as the Centre of Excellence because of their commitment to outstanding teaching and learning. Now in its third year, this category recognises the college or training provider that has achieved the highest number of medallists. To win the award again for the third year running is an excellent achievement for the North West! The Group goes the extra mile to prepare their students for the world of work, which has resulted in the majority of them securing jobs. Students say that the tutors are absolutely dedicated to preparing each person that walks through their doors for employment.

One such tutor is Donna, 36, who received the most votes to win the People’s Choice Award. She runs a centre for unemployed people as part of North Lancs Training Group. Her passion is helping people get what they need to succeed in work, from ICT skills to professional-looking CVs. Her centre has an impressive 96 per cent pass rate. Donna said “I’m honoured to win such a prestigious award. It means a lot to have so many people vote for me. I’m excited, proud and extremely overwhelmed. This award is the icing on the cake for all the hard work that has gone into developing the centre and working with the learners and the daily challenges that it brings.”

Another tutor at NLTG Heidi, 35, received a Livery Award from the Savoy Hotel London Educational Trust for her services to the Catering and Hospitality sector showing again the commitment of NLTG tutors to their learners.

Darwen resident Tyler Mack, 18, won the Apprentice of the Year award. He had a hard time in school, but once he realised his interest in business he started an Apprenticeship with Spencer Hayes Financial Services. He progressed quickly and finished his Level 2 Business Administration qualification at North Lancs three months ahead of schedule. Tyler said “It is absolutely brilliant to win a Lion Award. I wasn’t expecting to win anything, so it was quite a surprise. My dad is so proud, which makes me really happy.”

Chris Jones, CEO of City and Guilds, said “It’s a huge achievement to win a Lion Award, and they should feel really proud of their accomplishments. North Lancs is truly changing people’s lives by giving people the skills they need to find work. City & Guilds is all about helping people get into a job, progress on the job and move on to the next job, and it’s amazing to celebrate those who are making this a reality.”
