5 Apprenticeship Myths Busted!

Read on to learn more about the myths surrounding Apprenticeships and how they can be used with your existing employee talent pool to deliver real impact to your business.

Myth 1: Apprenticeships are only for young people 💁‍♀️

Apprenticeships are not just for young people starting out on the career ladder, they can be studied by existing employees of any age.   In fact, 48% of Apprenticeships started in 2022/23 were by people aged 25 and over*.

As there is no upper age limit, Apprenticeships can be used to support progression planning and the continuing professional development of existing employees, who already have experience in your organisation and the potential to become future leaders.

Myth 2: Apprenticeships are costly 💰

Apprenticeships are an incredibly cost-effective way to create a qualified workforce, adding to your company productivity and success.

In small to medium sized companies (SMEs), Apprenticeship training for employees aged up to 21 is now 100% funded, and for employees aged 21+ the Government funds 95% of the cost.  In addition, many large companies are supporting SMEs with the additional 5% contribution via money (Levy) transfers.

Levy paying employers (ie those with a pay bill of over £3 million) have funds ringfenced for Apprenticeship training. So, if your company pays the Apprenticeship Levy, these monies will allow you to support the development of your existing employees.

What’s more, regardless of the size of your company, if you train employees aged 16 to 18 via Apprenticeships, you’ll receive a £1,000 payment.

Myth 3: Apprenticeships can’t be used to develop employees with existing qualifications 🏆

Employees with prior attainments can study an Apprenticeship at the same, a lower or higher level, providing they are developing new skills and knowledge. This means that a Business Studies graduate may, for example, study a Level 3 Team Leader Apprenticeship, or an employee who has changed job role may study an Apprenticeship at Level 2 to help develop new skills.

Myth 4: Apprenticeships are only available in vocational occupations 👷‍♂️

Apprenticeships are available in a wide range of occupations including management, team leading, marketing, administration, coaching and IT.  As such they can support the professional development of employees throughout your company, from occupational specialists to support teams and managers.

Myth 5: Apprentices must be given day release 🏢

Apprentices are required to spend 6 hours per week completing off-the-job training during their normal working hours, but this doesn’t mean they have to spend one day a week away from the workplace. Off-the-job training can be delivered in the workplace and can include a range of naturally occurring activities. These include completing assignments, research, industry visits, equipment/machining training and work shadowing, to name just a few.

There’s no doubt that Apprenticeships can add value across your whole business.
