Case Study – Alec Preston Apprenticeship at Black Bull Inn Old Langho Name: Alec Preston Company: Black Bull Inn Old Langho Apprenticeship: Commis Chef Level 2 Alec Preston is sailing through his Commis Chef Level 2 Apprenticeship and proving to be a fantastic Chef at the Black Bull Inn Old Langho. When the Head Chef at Black Bull Inn told him about the Apprenticeship opportunities at NLTG, he knew that this was the next step for him so that he could progress in his career as a chef. As a Junior Sous Chef his duties include helping to create new menu choices which allows him to add to his portfolio of new recipes. He is also responsible for the running of the kitchen in the absence of the Senior Chefs. Alec said, “Amongst all of the skills that I have gained whilst on my Apprenticeship, the key take away for me is how I have greatly improved my time management, which is an important skill to have as a chef. Once I have completed my Apprenticeship, I would definitely like to continue my employment at Black Bull Inn so that I can use what I have learnt to contribute to improving the business. The best thing about being an apprentice for me is learning from the people around me. I have made great relationships with my colleagues, and I really enjoy working with them. My experience with NLTG as a whole has also been enjoyable! At times, my Apprenticeship has been a challenge, however, it has definitely been worth it. My tutor, Mark Chapman, has helped me throughout the whole process which has encouraged me to work hard to finish my qualification. If you are considering doing an Apprenticeships, I would 100% recommend you go for it! They help you to understand the business that you work for whilst also helping you to learn new skills and techniques.”
