Overview

Warehousing is a requirement for most businesses that manufacture, import, export or transport goods. The industry provides the opportunity to boost productivity and manage inventory which ensures greater customer satisfaction. If you enjoy co-ordinating and overseeing a job to its completion, then a career in the logistics, distribution and warehousing industry is for you.

You’ll be involved in organising the storage and distribution of goods to ensure the right products are delivered to the right location and on time – which may be within the UK, Europe or worldwide. You may be involved in organising the transportation of goods by air, sea, rail or road (including the selection of transport companies); stock control; and the processing, packaging and tracking of orders.

Understanding IT systems and the whole supply chain will be important in helping you to coordinate the receipt, storage and movement of goods effectively. You’ll work with a variety of customers and suppliers, so will need good communication skills and a passion for meeting their expectations by delivering excellent customer service. You’ll need to be flexible as the role will often require you to work shifts including nights, evenings and weekends.

Typical job roles include: Warehouse Assistant, Warehouse Operative and Trade Counter Assistant. These roles can be carried out in warehouses, wholesalers, factories and distributors to name a few.

Case Study

Adam Jackson at Sofology

I have been a Warehouse Operative at Golborne for a year and a half now, unloading vans and picking orders for delivery. Other members of my team were doing an Apprenticeship qualification with NLTG so I decided to do it as well. I am currently undertaking a Level 2 qualification in Warehouse and Storage. One of the main reasons for wanting to do a qualification was to further develop my skills and knowledge of the industry. Whilst doing the qualification I have learnt about all aspects of the job role that I am currently working in. I would recommend other Sofologists in operations take the opportunity to get a qualification to further enhance their knowledge and skills.
