Looking for bright, fast-learning staff for your Burnley company? The UK business context is changing rapidly every day, and there’s never been a better time to hire adaptable new teammates for your firm. If you’re wondering why now’s the best time to grow your team with an NLTG apprentice, we can think of at least 5 reasons for Burnley companies to hire an apprentice in 2022.

Hiring new staff has always been costly, and organisations can waste valuable work hours on interviews, advertising, and time-consuming background checks only to find that their chosen candidates need retraining. While established professionals have the advantage of experience, they often need time to become familiar with how things are done at your particular organisation. It can be frustrating, not to mention expensive for companies looking to fill a skills gap!

Apprenticeship programs can help employers avoid both of these potential pitfalls by giving you a more cost-effective way to hire, and quick-to-learn staff talent who start right away. With apprenticeship pathways such as NLTGs, we match you with local candidates who have already met our basic English and Math competencies, and who can hit the ground running by learning on the job with your teammates.

The third of our 5 reasons for Burnley companies to hire an apprentice in 2022 is that new apprentices can be fiercely loyal. Industry research and NLTG’s Employer Case Studies are full of examples of new apprentices who have remained loyal to their employers long after their initial training, rising through the ranks to create value at much more senior levels over time. This way, they save their employers the costs of high staff turnover, and contribute to a healthy learning culture!

The fourth reason for hiring an apprentice is the flexibility to mould and develop new apprentices per your Burnley organisation’s specific requirements. Hiring an apprentice means you can opt to train your new recruit in the most suitable way for their particular role, whether it’s job shadowing, mentoring, or action-based learning for a much more relevant skill set for your firm.

At the of our 5 reasons for Burnley companies to hire an apprentice in 2022 is the financial factor. For a brief and limited period, your company may be entitled to as much as £3,000 in increased government apprentice hiring incentives, depending on your candidate’s age and your firm’s size. Until the final day of January 2022, eligible employers are now able to receive a potential 300% increase on the £1000 apprentice hiring bonus simply for recruiting a new 16-18-year-old apprentice in a wide range of sectors. It’s the perfect way to reinvest in your people and any essential equipment, tech, or initiatives at the start of a brand new year!

What training do I need to provide?

You will need to train a new apprentice in their job role and provide them with a mentor, as you would with any new member of staff.  The apprentice however, may need a little more support, especially if they have not worked in your industry before or are learning a new role.

We will visit your premises every 4 to 6 weeks to help with the training and guide your apprentice through their programme.

How much does it cost to employ an apprentice?

Apprentices are employees of your company and you are responsible for paying your apprentice’s wage.  You must pay at least the Apprenticeship minimum wage and can find out more by clicking here.  The Apprenticeship minimum wage relates to apprentices aged 16 to 18, or aged 19 and above in the first year of their Apprenticeship.

What days and hours do apprentices work?

Apprentices are employees of your company, with the same rights and responsibilities as any other employee.

As such, you will decide the days and hours you would like apprentices to work (which must be at least 30 hours per week), their rest breaks and paid holiday entitlement etc, in line with Employment Law and the Working Hours Directive.

If you employ an apprentice aged under 18, the law states that they must not work more than 8 hours per day or 40 hours per week.  They are also entitled to paid holidays and rest breaks of at least 30 minutes if their shift lasts more than four and half hours.
